In 1 Corinthians, Paul boldly states, “I exhort you, be imitators of me.” This is what we are called to in our Christian walk, to set an example for others by imitating Christ and imitating mature believers who have lead us. I have been mentoring *Billy at the Jennifer Road Detention Center in Annapolis while he was being held pretrial, through his sentencing, and now while he is doing his time. We have formed a solid relationship doing Bible Study, discussing life, and building a plan for him to follow when he is released. A few weeks ago, he asked if he could bring his young cellmate along to our meetings. After the Chaplain approved these group sessions *David began attending as well.
I sat there last week in awe as Billy was warning David that he should take this time of incarceration seriously, that he should acknowledge what he had done wrong and ask God to forgive him. He told him that God could turn this negative in to a positive but he had to make a decision and put forth effort. I realized that just as I have imitated Joe, Billy was imitating me. God’s plan is good.
