“When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You. In God, whose Word I praise, In God I have put my trust; I shall not be afraid. What can mere man do to me?” Psalm 56:3-4 Working with young boys, incarcerated and charged with egregious crimes can sometimes feel like a recipe for disaster. Working with young boys, incarcerated and charged with egregious crimes can sometimes feel like a recipe for disaster. You can be assured that there will be sorrow, rejection, fear, and depression for both the boy and for us. It sometimes feels like a wild roller coaster as we walk alongside a boy who has no stability in his personal life, little support from family and friends, and is being held in conditions that promote the loss of hope.
In my own strength I cannot do this work. There are times I don’t even want to go inside if I must see a kid who I know is suffering BUT GOD… Those two words, BUT GOD, are often repeated in the Bible. Man sees one thing BUT GOD has another plan. Phil 2:27 says “For indeed he was sick to the point of death, BUT GOD had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, so that I would not have sorrow upon sorrow.”
We march forward serving these boys in their desperation, being drug down in to their sadness BUT GOD promises that joy will come in the morning. He is constantly rewriting the endings of the sad tales I tell myself. He takes the fear I have for the boys and for myself and turns it in to Hope! He is the One and only Redeemer, Restorer and Savior.
Tomorrow may be scary, BUT GOD…
What can mere man do to me anyway?
