unCUFFED Ministries Bible and Basketball Program Returns to the Baltimore City Juvenile Justice Center
After a three month hiatus due to Omicron, unCUFFED ministries has been blessed with a return to in-person visitation with the boys at the Baltimore City Juvenile Justice Center. That means 30 for 30 is also back! The aptly named and wildly popular Bible Study combines thirty minutes of working through an original youth-oriented lesson followed by a thirty minute game of three on three full court basketball! The games are officiated, and the scoreboard is lit up. The programing focuses on using The Word to find focus and direction in times of uncertainty. We show the boys a way to rely on those teachings not just as “religious” instructions meant for Sunday worship but understanding them as faith applications to live out what you believe.
God provided the seeds for the program organically. Originally, the facility had no place to accommodate us, so they put us in the gym. Because they are understaffed no one had put away the basketballs which were strewn about. One day I noticed one of the boys dozing off. I turned to the C.O. and said “Hey, do you mind if we shoot around some? I used to coach youth basketball.” He went and retrieved a whistle and voila! The Lord strikes again!
