Kaneka Brown - Charles Hickey School
Kaneka attends The Father’s House of Baltimore and is in a Doctoral Program at the Lancaster Bible College. She serves with unCUFFED at the The Charles Hickey School in the Mandela Building.
What is your favorite Bible verse? Matthew 7:28-29, “When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.” I chose this verse because I want to lead with authority like Jesus did to turn hearts toward Him.
Why do you serve with unCUFFED? A prophet came to our church and called me up front, he said I was merciless and needed to learn mercy. I realized that it was true and that I needed go to the prisons because I should have been there myself.
Have you made a special connection with a boy? A young man called Blue. He is fascinating. He has been having encounters with God but didn’t have language for it. I know where he is. I have been there. Together, we are putting words to his experience.
What makes you a succesful volunteer? I am patient. Kaneka is to modest to mention that she is also highly educated which benefits the boys at Hickey. She said, “the journey of education helps me be patient.”
What will change the climate of violence in Baltimore? Resources but that is putting cart before the horse, the Jesus horse.
What else do we need to know about you? Doing this work has been life changing for me. It has put the burden of God on my heart for these young men. Teaching them the hope of God, that He is calling and they now have hope. I pray that we can continue to impact them.
