James 5:16 “Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. A prayer of a righteous person, when it is brought about, can accomplish much.”
I was on a Google Meet session with the Lower Eastern Shore Children’s Center in Salisbury, Maryland and one of our boys, let’s call him Joey, stops me right in the middle of the session and says, “Can we just pray for everyone here and all the boys locked up right now?” This is the reason we do this work!
When a boy becomes involved in criminal activity and is incarcerated his friends, family, and society often devalue him and forget him. We know that sin deserves punishment, and we don’t shy away from speaking that truth to the boys, but more importantly they are still made in God’s image and valued by Him and by us. Remember that Jesus is for the least, the last, and the lost.
After some powerful group prayer Joey told me that he had written a wrap about Jesus and he gave us a sample on the spot. I so wanted to hit the record button on Google Meet but we adhere to strict rules of behavior and confidentiality in our virtual contact so I could not record the session. As the boys say, ‘the kid can spit a rhyme!’ In these days, that sometimes lack joy, this was the highlight of my week. What a terrific young man who is working to overcome his sin and be restored to society.
With Joey, I believe that the prayer of a righteous boy can accomplish much. When we join in and support his prayer effort corporately it can become world transforming. Would you join us tonight in praying for every boy and girl incarcerated in our country?
