We ask that you pray for the victims of drink driving accidents and for their families but at the same time pray for society to value the criminals, the addicts and the alcoholics that God might use them despite their sin for salvation and Kingdom works while here on Earth.
If you follow the news, you may have read about this horrific story on Folly Beach in South Carolina: https://abcnews.go.com/US/suspect-charged-dui-crash-killed-bride-south-carolina/story?id=99267785. A 25 year old young lady, more than three times the legal limit, crashed into a golf cart carrying a bride and her husband just after their wedding reception. The bride died, still in her wedding dress.
As we consider this situation our focus must be first on the victims and their families. Sadness will endure and the righteous anger is understandable. At unCUFFED, we also intend to minister to the perpetrators. Many in society would simply say lock them up and throw away the key but that is not how our justice system works. This young lady will be out in 10 years or less so we must focus on what we can do while alcoholics and addicts are incarcerated in order for God to change and redeem them. Consider Harvey Ruggs the NFL player who killed a young lady and her pet while driving 156 miles per hour at 2 am. He will also be out in less than 10 years. Is he made in God’s own image and can he still be redeemed?
I have been mentoring a man at the Baltimore City Correctional Center who was dedicated to his AA home group, had a sponsor, and had significant clean time. He choose to pick up and in the midst of that binge he killed someone while driving drunk. He has some time in and more to serve but I am working with him on how he might make amends, ask for forgiveness from the family of his victim, forgive himself, and ultimately accept God’s forgiveness. We do not diminish the sin, but we know that even a murderer, like David in the Bible, can still be a man after God’s own heart.
